Welcome back to the Dispotech blog!

We have spoken of instant ice very often in our articles, explaining its practical aspects and emphasising the countless benefits of cold. We have always recommended that you keep a bag of instant ice at home or in places where you practise sports. But have you ever wondered how you should throw away a disposable ice pack after using it?

In today’s article we’ll give you lots of tips on how to dispose of it safely. Have a great read!

A bag of instant ice is one of the most useful medical devices you can keep handy in so many different contexts: at home, in the office, on holiday, when going out to do sport... but do you know where to throw it away after using it? We at Dispotech are here to help and explain how to dispose of it in the most eco-friendly manner.

First of all, an ever-useful reminder: instant ice is a disposable device, so it cannot be reused in any manner - and we’ll explain why. Inside the non-woven fabric or plastic bag, there is a compound of water and ammonium nitrate, a salt that breaks down and mixes with water when the bag is pressed with the fingers, creating an endothermic reaction. Here, the chemical ice pack cools instantly in your hands, reaching a temperature from 0° to -4°.

The ice-cold effect lasts about 30 minutes. You will realise that the cold effect is diminishing because, little by little, the bag will begin to reach temperatures above zero. At this point, the bag of instant ice goes into the proper waste bin, meaning undifferentiated or dry waste - depending on how your municipality refers to it.

Unfortunately, the elements comprising disposable instant ice bags cannot be recycled and, therefore, must be disposed of in the appropriate skip bins. Make sure you don’t puncture and/or damage them in any way which may cause liquids to leak out. Ammonium nitrate, as well as the plastic/non-woven fabric containing it, are harmful if dispersed in the environment.

If you have any doubts in this regard, we recommend that you contact your local municipality and find out how to dispose of undifferentiated waste correctly: you will be doing what is right and protecting nature.
